Wings roll warriors in msl 10-3

Posted by Lee Vickery, Mon May 14 2012

It was pleasant to come into this game with a respectable training session offensively under our belt and the expectation that a lowly ranked Warriors team (who were smacked 35-3 by Brighton only a fortnight ago) would give us some badly needed time on offence.  It was evident early in the game that this gave the lads some confidence at the attacking end of the field as we dominated early taking a 4-0 first quarter lead.  Scott Gill was largely responsible for this as he dominated the offense through the midfield easily beating his player on a number of occasions and dishing off the ball to players cutting in support.

Sadly, we could not keep this momentum up in the second as we reverted to some undisciplined offensive play creating a number of turnover opportunities for Woodville as they clawed the score back to 4-2 at the half.

The third quarter saw some improvement but we managed to let a number of scoring opportunities go begging through poor shooting.  It was pleasing to see Kyle Forrest continue to improve each week as he again continues to beat opposition on the drive.  I am sure his first goal is just around the corner, with many more to follow!

Once again our defensive aggression was superb, but it was disappointing to see some great efforts penalised by some poorly made umpiring decisions.  To the  men in black and white  I say just because it looks rough doesn’t make it a penalty, a good body check and a firm stick should not be penalised just because it is rough!!!  In the past 3 games we have had around 6-10 minutes of penalties for the match, this week we played the same way and received 31 minutes in a very onsided affair!

The last quarter saw the players frustrations at the umpiring start to boil over, with several players being sent off for unsportsmanlike behaviour.  But to our credit we managed to ride out the rubbish a pile on a 4-0 goal last quarter eventually winning the game 10-3.  This was largely due to some sniper like shooting from Glenn Steele and good man up ball movement.

Once again the game brought some great defensive efforts from Scott Vickery, Nick Brown and Matt T Smith and some nice finishing moves by Kristian DenOtter.

Best: Scott Gill, Glenn Steele, Scott Vickery, Nick Brown, Matt T Smith

Goals: Glenn Steele 4.1, Kristian DenOtter 2.0, Scott Gill 1.2, Matt J Smith 1.0, Brett Langstreth 2.0, Kyle Forrest 0.1.

Redwings MSL roll the Bays in a tough battle 6-5

Posted by Lee Vickery, Mon Apr 30 2012

With the scratchyness of our first game behind us we would have to drastically improve  this week to be able to play with last years grand finalists, Glenelg.  Fortunately the bays were in a similar position as us with a number of players missing from their 2012 team including notable retirees Stuart Robb and Michael Sheidow.

Not surprisingly the game was dominated by both teams defenses.  Tom Vickery again showed his class in the cage as he handled numerous blasts on goal with ease.  Unfortunately our inability to clear the ball with accuracy meant a l9ot of time in defense.  Luckily our defense was equal to the task shutting down the GLC offense to a 1 goal first quarter.  This trend was to continue with the Bays holding more than 65% of posessio0n and pushing ahead to a 4-3 lead at ¾ time.

The last quarter saw our offense finally pick up a little as we continued to penetrate the GLC defense bagging 3 final quarter goals, with a very nice clearing goal from defenseman Matt Smith.

It was a very satisfying and FANTASTIC win!

Best: Tom Vickery, Matt T Smith, Brad Comfort, Nick Brown, Scott Vickery

Goals: Glen Steele 1.1, Kristian DenOtter 1.0, Chris Kirton 1.0, Mat Brown 1.0, Matt T Smith 1.0.

MSL kciks of season with a tough OT win 10-9 v Sturt.

Posted by Lee Vickery, Thu Apr 26 2012

After a fairly warm and unsettled preseason it was nice to be back into the swing of the regular season and the winter weather which accompanied our first game.  It was pleasing to welcome a young Kyle Forrest from Rostrevor College into the team to bring us some much needed pace and hustle as well as import Brad Comfort from Queens University, North Carolona who will certaintly toughen up our defense.

Predictably the game kicked of with a very slow first quarter as both teams missed a number of opportunities.  At the end of the first quarter scores were tied at 1-1 and despite dominating possession Sturt looked the better team.  The second quarter saw teams settle into their plans better but much of the poor stick work continued to plague us as the small two goal lead we built quickly turned into a goal deficit at the half due to some good transition work and opportunistic scoring.

The second half saw us improve significantly as we moved Kristian DenOtter back into the forward line.  The added fluency Kristian created allowed us to continue to dominate possession and gave Glenn Steele and Scott Petersen some great scoring opportunities.  However poor shot selection and inability to connect with vital passes allowed Sturt to stay within reach at all times and even level the game up in the last minute of the last quarter.

Going into overtime it was nice to see the lads had some confidence in their record of overtime victories with everyone working hard to contribute.  As usual our defense lead by Tom Vickery was solid forcing Sturt to take low percentage shots and giving our offense the time they needed to snare us the win.

Best: Scott Gill, Tom Vickery, Mat Brown, Brett Langstreth, Brad Comfort

Goals: Scott Gill 4.2, Glenn Steele 3.0, Brett Langstreth 1.0, Scott Petersen 1.0, Kristian DenOtter
